I'm a cryptkeeper again!

Quick annoucement before tomorrow: as it is a tradition every year, I participate to the Countdown to Halloween. You know Vraie Fiction becomes spookier and spookier from mid-August (sometimes even before) onwards when I start getting in the mood for my favourite holiday, but tomorrow being the official countdown, be prepared many posts about Halloween in all its aspects. I hesitated a lot before choosing the badge for this year's countdown. Then I thought that, being a cat lover and having been the owner of a black cat in the not so distant past, having this one made perfect sense.

The sticky toffee pudding obsession

I blogged two week ago about my parents' sudden interest in this British classic dessert that is the sticky toffee pudding. I mocked them a bit about it. Well, maybe I should not have. We went to Pizza Express recently and they had their own version of the dessert, called "Sticky Toffee Bundt Cake". So they imply it is a variant of two desserts, or a hybrid. But basically, as you can easily see on the picture, it is the same pudding. And yes, I felt that I had to try it. A sticky toffee pudding. In a pizzeria. For sociological purposes of course: I wanted to blog about it. And yes, my verdict is simple: it IS a toffee pudding.

And it was a good one too, albeit a tad small. I expect my puddings to be bigger and thus more filling. There is no point counting after calories when you eat that sort of dessert and you don't expect very subtle flavours: it tastes of caramel, of dates a bit (if there are any), of fatty, creamy stuff, you need to feel like you are receiving a sugar overload and utterly contented. I still think the best place to eat one is in a pub. So this is what I will do next time I eat in a pub. And I know, I have developed the same obsession as my family. Which is good, as I expect there will be some on the menu when we go home at Christmas.

Black Wych

Halloween is coming and that means drinking spooky stuff. More often than none, the beer lover that I am enjoy products from the Wychwood Brewery. Last weekend, I revisited for the first time in about fifteen years the Black Wych. And last time I drank it, I did not appreciate it much, because I was already seriously wasted. Now being older and (somewhat) wiser, I could truly enjoy it. I seldom drink porters, I am more into brown ales than black ones, but this one is quite good. Witches being one of the important characters of Halloween folklore, I will try to drink more of this one. One last observation: the witch on the label is not an ugly old hag but a young and sexy sorceress. This is a rare coming from Wychwood: most of their characters, like the Hobgoblin, are ugly critters. Don't know why, but I find this detail quite interesting.

Question existentielle (313)

40

It was the birthday of a friend yesterday. She turned forty. Just like I turned forty this year. And then wishing her happy birthday it struck me: they all turn forty these days. All my friends from college and uni, the friends I kept in contact with, the friends I am still friend with. I am not merely stating the obvious here. I mean of course I will find more people I know and love getting older as I get older and obviously friends of my generation are about my age and thus the same big numbers show up on my Facebook feed the same year. But still I am conscious about our mutual age. It felt like an epiphany yesterday, seeing yet again that number. It was a bit of a memento mori too.

"Sean Bean can do no wrong!"

My readers know my obsession for a certain Aussie actress. But I recently discovered that anyone can worship an actor. My mother-in-law started watching Game of Thrones and when my wife asked her what she thought of it, she replied: "Sean Bean can do no wrong!" I thought that was funny, and kind of true. Even when the rest sucks, Sean Bean is great. So I decided to add it here as a new great unknown line.

Chat automnal

Familiar spirits

As I am already in a Halloween mood, I have started reading horror stories. Among my reads is In a Glass Darkly, the classic collection of short stories from Sheridan le Fanu, an author I had long wanted to revisit. One of the stories, The Familiar, I had wanted to read since my teenage, when I had borrowed a book from the library that included the story, but had to return it before I could start it. I was suspecting that the familiar from the title was a familiar spirit, the supernatural entity that helps witches do their evil deeds. It turned out that it was the ghost of the story, which at some point may or may not have taken the guise of an owl that was the pet of the fiancée of the protagonist. Maybe the owl was a familiar after all...

In any case, familiar spirits would make for great antagonists in horror stories. They have not been used much, from what I know (i.e. I have not seen them in anything I can think of, except this vague implication in Le Fanu's short story). Whether they are ghosts or demons, they represent a far more tangible menace as they have a physical form, they are not merely apparitions. There should be stories written about them, especially if they take the already ghostly and spooky form of an owl. Any ideas? You can write them in the comments below. Oh, and I took this picture in an owls sanctuary in Derbyshire. I have no idea what kinds of owls they are, but they looks very sinister and could make very convincing familiar spirits.

Havana Cigars

No, no I don't smoke, not cigars, nothing of the sort, although I do like the smell of cigars. And my father being an amateur of cigars, although he does not smoke them much if at all anymore, I have learned a thing or two about them. I know that Cuban cigars are allegedly the best and that Cohiba is a cigar brand. So anyway, I saw this cigar case at the bar of the very fancy hotel where my parents and my brother PJ stayed the last two days of their time here. And apparently, the case is not merely for decoration: they offer an array of cigars on their menu. I wonder if my dad had some during his stay. Anyway, as I liked the old fashioned elegance of the case I took the picture and decided to share it here.

Wolfie's socks

Yesterday, my wife was asked by a random woman where she had bought Wolfie's socks, as she wanted to get something like this for the birth of her friend's newborn baby daughter. My wife answered that they socks had been knitted by her mother-in-law. Learning, this, I was so proud of my mum. She takes her role of grandmother very seriously and also she wants to make sure that our little one keeps warm. So she knitted the confiest socks you can ever find for a baby. And she now intends to knit hats, so soon Wolfie will be well equipped in warm hats that will make many people here very jealous. And they will not be on sale either...

Now it's undeniable

No matter how you look at it, today is the September equinox, so it is autumn. For me it starts with the month, but I know some people think it's summer until whenever. Well, summer's over, now it is autumn. Period. And I am glad we can finally all agree on it.

Poltergeist?

No, no, I am not talking about the movie (one of the first horror movies I saw) but about the phenomenon. Although it really reminded me of the movie. This anecdote could be part of my countdown to Halloween post. Anyway, yesterday morning, I was brushing my teeth upstairs before going to work, when I heard one of the noisy toys of Wolfie starting to play in the living room downstairs. There was nobody downstairs to trigger the darn thing. Thankfully my wife and son did not wake up and I turned off the toy. Now for the record, I do not believe for a second that there were ghosts or that the toy was turned on by any kind of supernatural or paranormal force, but nevertheless it reminded me of Poltergeist.

Accursed cold pandemic

Well, it had to happen, I had been feeling too great about everything recently but here it is: I have a nasty cold. Which means I cough like there is no tomorrow. I hate it. Little Wolfie had it first, then gave it to me, to his mother, both his set of grandparents and of course, now I am the one suffering from it the most, as usual when I catch a cold. I really hate it.

Liverpool Lime Street Station (a memory)

I took this picture at the National Railway Museum of York. You might think it looks ugly, but I can assure you the original is much uglier. I took this photo not for its aesthetic value, or lack of, but because when I was working in Liverpool, more than ten years ago, this was the station I was going to and from during my commute. Back in the days when I was still a teacher and an academic, this was therefore part of my daily life. We all form weird sorts of attachment regarding elements from a time in our life when we were fond of and this is one of them. Not that I am not happy now, in fact being a father makes me far happier than I ever was, but professionally speaking, my "Liverpool job" as I often call it has been the one I enjoyed the most in all my adult life. And this reminds me of that time.

The virtues of afternoon naps

I had to go back early from work today for a doctor's appointment (no worries, it was only for something minor and it is taken care of). As it was in the middle of the afternoon when I left and my day had been very quiet, it was not worth going back to work, so I stayed home for the rest of the day. Which means that I spent a good bit of time with little Wolfie, then I... napped! For more than an hour. Which I rarely do, even at weekends. As our baby boy wakes up often in the night and the night before had been particularly rough, it felt really great. I had forgotten how rejuvenating afternoon naps can be.

Sticky toffee pudding craze

Last Sunday, we went with my family to a local pub, which I mentioned in this post. For dessert, I had a sticky toffee pudding, pictured here, a British classic. You can also have it with custard. My parents, who were already full from the roast and thus not having dessert, got really enthusiastic about it. They had a little bite and found it delicious. Of course they insisted that Wolfie should have a few bites and now he loves it (better check his sugar intakes when they're around). They are traveling in the Lake District at the moment and I have now learned that they and my brother PJ had sticky toffee pudding again. And again. They literally turned into sticky toffee pudding aficionados.

A frugal breakfast

Last week, my wife, little Wolfie and I went to celebrate our wedding anniversary in the hotel where we had the wedding reception ten years before, a very fancy hotel with a fancy restaurant to go with it. We had dinner there and then breakfast the next morning. And I had this for breakfast: scrambled eggs with smoked salmon. I thought it would be posh and different and fitting for the day. It was nice enough, I mean it tasted nice, but it was rather frugal. My wife said I could not have expected an all-you-can-eat from a Holiday Inn, but all the same it was unexpectedly frugal for the first meal of the day and the special circumstances. Ten years ago we ate plenty.

Excalibur (and find the three mistakes)

Today, we spent the afternoon at the local park in a yearly fayre. I had the chance to drink the September ale from Rebellion Beer, called Excalibur, as every month this year they celebrate a great Briton. As a medievalist specialized in the Arthurian legend, I had to have a pint. Rebellion Beer brews some of my favourite ales, so it is another reason to have a pint of their products whenever I have the occasion. My verdict? Not bad for a blonde, but the label has three mistakes which I thought I listed here. But first try to spot them. Come on. Two are easy enough. Anyway, here they are:

1)King Arthur was a child or a very young man, certainly not a mature man like in the image.
2)Obviously he was no king yet when he pulled the sword from the stone, so he had no crown.
3)The sword in the stone, contrary to popular beliefs, was not Excalibur, which he obtained in different circumstances.

All right, that was just a label to sell beer after all, but I thought it was a funny exercize for the medievalist that I am, or used to be.

Les blaireaux

Nouveau billet animalier.

Time to prepare for another birthday

So little Wolfie's birthday is barely over that it suddenly struck me that I must start preparing for the birthday of my wife, which is in about two month's time. You might think that this is not in a long while, but two months is very short, especially when I have little time alone to shop for presents, especially since my wife is difficult to shop for. Not that she is high maintenance or anything like this, it's just difficult to find the right presents for her, both original (so she will not expect them) and that she will enjoy. I usually start looking for them now.

Autumn has arrived

This picture was taken in Derbyshire. I use it with this post because it looks like it now outside: while the colours of autumn are not all quite here, you can feel in the air that the season has most definitely arrived. Last year almost day by day, I was getting desperate to see signs of autumn on the hottest day of September on record. This year, it is far cooler outside. It feels like a proper September, like the ones of old. So I can safely say that autumn is here.

First sign of Halloween

I saw these bags of sweets, with the orange and black and critters that give away the holiday they relate to last Sunday at the local Marks & Spencer. I was disappointed to see one so relatively late: sometimes I could see things as early as August, but I will not complain. Halloween is on its way and I am on a very spooky mood. I did not buy any because I don't like these sorts of sweets and we have plenty of sugary stuff here, but I took a picture for the blog.

Sharing birthdays

We celebrated very recently the birthday of little Wolfie. Yet it was not solely his birthday, as my son and his grandfather on his mother's side share the same date of birth. It might sound like nothing, but that means that last year, my father-in-law did not really do more on his birthday than wait anxiously for the news and then check about of his grandson was doing in his first day in the world. And this year, his birthday was completely sidestepped in favour of Wolfie's birthday. I was feeling very guilty about it. We tried to remember it, we bought one present for Wolfie's grandfather and said the cake was for both, but let's face it: it was not the grandfather's name on the cake. When my father-in-law came in for the party, I said how sorry I was for stealing his big day, and he said: "Why are you sorry? A year ago you gave me the best birthday present ever." So I think he's okay with it. And this deserves to be a great unknown line.

Who else remembers?

It seems that everybody forgot, from what I can tell from my news feed. Well, I did not, even though I did not think all that much about it. Maybe now that we live in constant fear of Islamist terrorism, 9/11 seems rather tame, maybe grief softens when crime becomes history. This year again, I will invite my readers to read what I wrote in 2008 and 2009. I am quite proud of these posts.

Question existentielle (312)

The Sunday Roast experience

Today was Sunday and we decided to initiate my parents and my brother PJ to a proper Sunday roast experience in a nearby pub. It was a proper day for it and no, not only because it was a Sunday: it was cool and dreary outside, borderline cold and we were all in dire need of comfort food. The pub was not the fanciest, but it serves decent food and the staff is always friendly (our son is very popular there). It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Wolfie had a bit of my roast (picture right) and his mummy's vegetarian version. it was so filling that we didn't have dinner yet. Although I might make myself something light for supper in a moment.

About David's Tea's Harvest Collection

I blogged about the Harvest Collection of David's Tea a few weeks ago. I was wondering if it was their autumn collection (or Fall as they call it). I asked and received confirmation that it was indeed from the company itself (yes I asked because I had time to waste). About the collection itself, while I find it nice enough I don't know if I like it nearly as much as the ones from the previous years. Not sure why exactly, but I find it less typically autumnal.

Sage conseil...

Psychological horror

This post is for the fellow Halloween lovers among you, a reading suggestion. I know that for the laymen Halloween is far away, but we know it is getting closer and if like me you are already in a spooky mood, you have started reading scary stories. I usually break the ice of not with a classic Gothic tale but with psychological horror. Usually in August, sometimes as early as late July. This year it was this book, last year it was The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. In recent years, that was maybe the best horror discovery I made. In it, there is no monster jumping from the dark, no ghost showing up in the flesh (so to speak), no blood, no gore... Only people forced to face their own demons, and maybe they are the only real ghosts of the story. I don't want to give any away, this is not a book review or an analysis, merely a plug. Read it.

Preparing Wolfie's first birthday

It will soon be Wolfie's first birthday. I do not want to repeat an old cliché, but it did go quickly. Anyway, as it is a very special, very important birthday, we want to make it special: there are loads of presents for him that we need to wrap up. There will be a rather important contingent of both sides of the family with him: all his grandparents and his uncle PJ. We still have not decided whether we want to spend the day at home or go elsewhere (to a farm or something). Anyway, if someone among you has any suggestions, please write it in the comments.

The Ticklers in secondary school

Time flies: today was the first day of the Ticklers at the secondary school. It was the school where I used to work seven years ago. A bit more now come to think of it, I worked there from late 2009 until May 2010. I don't regret my time there, but I am glad I don't work there anymore, having left an education career somewhat bitter (see this post for what I feel about school here). It would have been strange to teach them, probably not easy, as they are too familiar with me. Still, I sometimes wonder about it. Anyway, I saw a picture of Blonde Tickler on Facebook in her new school uniform and I felt a bit sad. I hope they don't grow up too fast.

Excalibur is real!

Well, almost. I have read the coolest news ever today: a schoolgirl found in Cornwall a sword in the lake where King Arthur is meant to have thrown it away. Granted, it is most likely a prop from a movie, there are plenty on the subject, or an hoax. But for the medievalist that I am, specialized in the Arthurian legend (no kidding: I did my PhD in Arthurian literature), it still gives me butterflies reading this. I envy that child so much.

Phoque.

"We don't need no education..."

And you know the rest, or at least I hope you do. If there is a song that  illustrates everything wrong (or that can be wrong) with the school system, it might be that one. So to all the kids going back to school this week, I give you this song and the clip from the movie The Wall by the greatest rock group of all, Pink Floyd. Okay, so everything is not that bad, but when it does get bad, it feels like it, like you are in the meat grinder.

The White Hart

We recently went to the small village of Nettlebed for an afternoon, my wife, my son and I. And, while we never stopped there, we saw a pub with the greatest name: The White Hart. Now, I love stags as pub's name and as pub's ensign, as I mentioned before, but white ones are even better because in myths and legends they are associated with the supernatural. So it sounds far cooler than any other name for a pub. While this is not the best ensign I saw, it is nice enough, and anyway just for the name it is worth a visit next time we go do Nettlebed.

Ça me donne faim rien que d'y penser.

Harvest season

I know it is the second post in a short period of time where I blog about autumn and harvest, but be warned: I intend to turn this blog into a celebration of all things autumnal for the next few weeks, because it is my favourite season. So anyway, I took this picture in Cardiff Castle and had wanted to share it since then, because it represents harvest so well. I miss picking apples and I have been wanting to do it again for a long time. Now that would be with Wolfie, which would quadruple the fun at least. Apples are the emblematic fruits of autumn and I love them, whether I eat them raw or in a dessert (but I am not a fan of apple pies ironically enough), or even as part of a main meal. But all fruits and vegs are enjoyable to harvest. It is the ritual that is fun, calming and which I miss terribly.

Welcoming September

Happy first of September everyone! For me, it is the beginning of autumn. To start the month and the season, it is a tradition on this blog to upload a picture of this basket full of fruits and crabapple and apple jellies, the bounty of autumnal harvest in a sort of horn of plenty. I have been waiting for that moment a long time. I will of course blog more about my favourite season and what it means to me this year, as it has gained new significance. Until then, happy first day of September.
